So, why one morning
did I come into my class and have a “Merci Melinda.” note on my desk? Was there a mysterious gnome enjoying my class
through the night, leaving me messages of appreciation? No, although that is a
fun idea. I have been watching Amélie so the fairy tale theme is stuck in my
mind.
This special little
message was actually from the custodian who takes such great care of my room.
He is so awesome, always smiling, always happy and talkative. He doesn’t even
get mad when my students make collages and little pieces of paper end up all
over on the floor. He demanded that I stop sweeping them up one afternoon when
he found me trying to tidy up after my crazy class left without a glance at the
floor.
I sometimes stay “a
little” late working to get things done before going home so I can “just” go
home without feeling guilty about not taking papers or lesson planning
home. One evening, my happy custodian
came in to my room and asked me a favor, a really cool one. He asked me to
teach him something so that he can speak French with me when he sees me in the
halls. Awesome! I spent a little time with a few basics and before
you know it we had the beginning of a conversation.
It is always a good
time to learn a language.
Meeting people who
have an interest in my passion and having the ability to share it with them. Opening new doors for communication and
sharing….en français.
That is why I
teach!
