Reason #61 Stepping…jumping out into the unknown

This is a big week. On Friday I picked up the Purchase Order for project supplies. It is official: we have the funding to start painting! I have the supply list and PO to take to the store.  Tuesday is the big shopping day and then we will start some prep work Wednesday after school.  Then Thursday and Friday are the big days.

Can we do it? Can we get it done it two days?

How is this all going to work? I haven’t had a real plan up to now. Things have just evolved and so far, so good.

What an image:  50ish kids + primer, paint, rollers, brushes, stucco repair stuff, stencils, buckets, ladders (me only there), spray paint, chalk….oh my!  Some peoples' nightmare is actually our dream!

I can imagine….paint everywhere….hands, hair, clothing, spatters, spills… It actually sounds like lots of fun! How could it not be?

What an experience.  It is truly life-changing!  For us all! This is all coming together.

May the community experience continue…

Reason #60 Snickers bar or hamburger?

Somehow, someway my last period class got on to the subject of my preferences in cuisine. Oh yes, it began by me commenting to Olivia, who was absolutely not eating a burrito in the front row, that she needed to go finish her burrito in the hallway.  As she shook her head and swore there was no burrito, I continued to talk about the fact that they are not my favorite food and now the room was going to smell like this imaginary burrito. Claire then asked if I was vegetarian….that is how it all started.

I wonder what they put in school lunches. Well, maybe I really don’t want to know.  Why is it that my after-lunch classes are so “energetic”?  I am at the point of going with the flow and accepting this heightened level of “excitement” and working to inspire the highest possible level of productivity.  This day, we ended up 25 minutes behind my other class.  Ah, c’est la vie!
To get back to Claire’s question, I simply stated that I am not a vegetarian, I just don’t feel like eating meat. Of course, she pushed the fact that if I don’t eat meat I am a vegetarian. I tried to ignore it, but as I have mentioned before, she does not forget. That is how I ended up having to do a handstand.  She brought up the time last year when she came in to class late with two pieces of pizza and I was upset so she gave me one. She reminded me that it was pepperoni and asked if I would eat one now. It actually sounded pretty good at that point since I hadn’t had much lunch. But, I told her probably not because I like just plain cheese pizza.  Why can not one believe that I really enjoy just cheese pizza?

I was relieved when we got off the pizza topic when another student then said that I didn’t eat eggs because I am vegetarian.  Ok. Now I knew that there was some education needed. This led to a discussion about the difference between being vegetarian, which I am not, and vegan, which I absolutely cannot imagine.  How could I live without cheese and cream and butter and yogurt and ice cream…life would not be the same.  I guess one never knows though. Who thought I’d be a non-vegetarian who doesn’t eat meat?  I grew up in Michigan after all!

After our lesson on vegan vs vegetarian, Serge put out hypothetical situation. “Miss, if they world was at an end and things were bombed out and there was only a hamburger or a Snickers bar, which would you eat?” The class laughed. Like why would it matter at that point? I replied the hamburger because I don’t like peanuts and caramel…..a Milky Way though….different story.  Serge has this way of pulling things together and wrapping things.  I was thankful for it because they entire questioning round was getting exhausting.

What a conversation. It was like herding cats. We will see if they pass the quiz on Tuesday about vegetarian vs vegan.

Merci Serge pour ta situation hypothétique. C’était amusante et intéressante.  J’espère que je ne me trouve jamais dans cette situation !

Working with amazing personalities that make me laugh and, at the same time, appreciate weekends!

Reason #59 Hold on….we can learn from this

Moments to remember….there are so many. Friday, Arielle asked me “Miss, how do you say “lame” en français?”  I asked her for more context since there are many meanings of the word lame and I wasn’t sure where she was going with the idea.  Laurence, who was sitting right in front of her, was making fun of her wanting to know and trying to get her to stop.  To explain the context, she said “Like an activity is lame…”. Laurence continued to protest.  Arielle put her hand to to silence Laurence and with a completely serious look on her face and steady tone of voice, she said “Hold on….we can learn something from this.  I can learn to say it in French.” It was hilarious. She was right. I am all about teaching language students want to use and will use immediately. Well, this was an opportunity.  Another funny thing was that I didn’t know how to say lame in that context. Off to Word Reference I went. They didn’t have anything there that I felt worked quite right. Arielle and Laurence continued their bantering and it was funny to watch. Teasing….a French skill in itself.

This experience made me realize that I guess I really don’t talk about things being “lame” or I would know the word.  It is funny the things I learn from my kids questions.  Later on that day, I asked my French friend about it and even he couldn’t come up with one word. We found a way around it, but nothing exact.  Does that mean that the French don’t think things are “lame” like we Americans?  Something to ponder…
.
Merci Arielle pour ta curiousité. Tu nous as donné un moment amusant!  Alors, pour répondre à ta question, on dit « C’est nulle, cette activité. ».

Reason #58 Figuratively speaking

What does it mean to have a voice? Do you feel like you have one?

These are two powerful questions, ones that impact our daily lives, our every moment. To have the opportunity to open up this question to adolescents, adults in the near future is so full of surprises, and so rewarding.

The classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac, is there a better story to illustrate the consequences of using or not using one’s voice? I think not. How timely that this movie was to exactly follow the beginning of our wall project? Serendipity I tell you. I couldn’t have planned it to work this smoothly!

We finished the movie and surprisingly there were no tears, well, besides mine.  How is it that I can cry every year when I watch these movies? I have seen them so many times, more than I can count. Is it that the stories are just so relevant, timeless?  Maybe, or maybe I am just a hopeful romantic. That is probably perfect combination to induce crying, every year.
After the movie, at the point where usually someone else is crying, one student asked the question “So, what was the point?”  Merci Alex. What a perfect lead in to the conversation about how the film illustrated having a voice. We were talking about the end where Cyrano dying, sorry to spoil the ending if you haven’t seen it, and one student said “Didn’t Cyrano really die at the same time Christian did in the war, figuratively?” There should be some proud English teachers out there- great use of literary term in a perfect context. What a cool connection to be made.

Now, if Zoe can just remember his phone, his gym bag, and his shoes……he is lucky I tend to stay for a little while after school every day!

Merci Zoe pour ton analyse du film et bonne connexion avec la perte des paroles et la mort figurative.  C’est une bonne leçon pour tout le monde.

Intellectual conversations about real-life issues….

Reason #57 A mysterious thank you note

So, why one morning did I come into my class and have a “Merci Melinda.” note on my desk? Was there a mysterious gnome enjoying my class through the night, leaving me messages of appreciation? No, although that is a fun idea. I have been watching Amélie so the fairy tale theme is stuck in my mind.

This special little message was actually from the custodian who takes such great care of my room. He is so awesome, always smiling, always happy and talkative. He doesn’t even get mad when my students make collages and little pieces of paper end up all over on the floor. He demanded that I stop sweeping them up one afternoon when he found me trying to tidy up after my crazy class left without a glance at the floor.

I sometimes stay “a little” late working to get things done before going home so I can “just” go home without feeling guilty about not taking papers or lesson planning home.  One evening, my happy custodian came in to my room and asked me a favor, a really cool one. He asked me to teach him something so that he can speak French with me when he sees me in the halls.  Awesome!  I spent a little time with a few basics and before you know it we had the beginning of a conversation.

It is always a good time to learn a language.

Meeting people who have an interest in my passion and having the ability to share it with them.  Opening new doors for communication and sharing….en français.

That is why I teach!

Reason #56 Shaving a cat

Yes, the idea of shaving a cat came up in class.  In French, proverbs are a part of everyday conversation. For this reason, I teach them in all classes and work with proverbs that fit our theme.  In my upper level classes, I was working with ways to tell someone about having a lot to do and that there are many ways of doing things.

How many proverbs do you know?  Can you think of one right off the top of your head? Maybe one or two?  Maybe none? A funny thing that I am finding is that my students do not know proverbs in English. It is like a double-duty lesson. I have been surprised by the number of students who look at me blankly and are then excited to have learned a new proverb in two languages.

I was working with my French IV/V class and the expression of the day was: “Il y a plusieurs façons de plumer un canard.” This literally means: “There are many ways to pluck a duck.”  The kids got the duck part and then struggled to figure out the English version.  When I mentioned cat and skinning, Pierre said you mean “There are many ways to shave a cat?” Why not? The rest of the class burst into laughter and that has been the proverb ever since.  How creative they can be!

Merci Pierre pour ton enthousiasme et créativité. C’est un vrai plaisir de passer du temps avec toi il y a quatre ans! Oh que tu es doué en français !

Creative liberties in both French and English….

Reason #55 Languages as elements

In my French I class, I work on pronunciation skills as French is so different from English. Words link one to the other and it has a special flow to it.  That is why it is so beautiful, not that I am biased or anything.  It is actually like a song.

As I was pointing out some specific examples in a poem and talking about the rhythm, Mathieu said “If languages were elements, French would be water because it flows so smoothly.”  What a beautiful metaphor.

Sometimes it takes a new pair of eyes and ears to shed light on things that have been a part of our lives for a long time. Seeing a language that I have loved for so long in a new way, what a gift…

Merci Mathieu pour ton observation et compréhension de la beauté du langage français!

Reason #54: What goes around, comes around.

I know that I have been teaching at a school for a while, or just teaching a while, when I start having younger siblings in my classes. This is something truly special because it means that I am able to be a part of a family’s life for many years, many depending on the number of siblings.

Today, not only was I reminded that one of my girls has two older sisters who took French with me, but I also learned that her best friend has also benefited.  Jeanne-Marie told me today that she remembered learning French from her best friend, Cristelle, who was learning it from her older sisters.  She went over the French Cristelle taught her and they just laughed remembering it.  This was back when they were in middle school and now they are sophomores! Not so many years ago, but enough to make it count!

The way they were smiling and laughing about it made me so happy. How awesome it is to think that years ago when I had no idea that two of my students were taking French home and passing it along in a way that really would make a difference. On top of that, I would be able to witness that personally years later and benefit from it as well!   I guess it is not just a cliché after all, what goes around comes around.  What a gift!

Next year, Cristelle and Jeanne-Marie will be among the group of students who will travel to France.  Now that will be an interesting chapter in the journey.

Merci Cristelle et Jeanne-Marie pour votre enthousiasme!   Je suis impatiente pour notre déjeuner avec la tarte aux pecans !

Reason #53 50...Really?

This being a mom, connecting with family and friendsworking a full-time job, training-teachers, and practicing yoga to maintain “serenity within the stress” certainly does get in the way of keeping up with a blog.  I never would have guessed that my old-fashioned paper planner, because I love to write more than type, would fill up so quickly.  I need to create one post a day and there are so many more!

I am up to 50; fifty posts behind!  I haven’t written in a few weeks, but this goes far beyond my one a day. I won’t figure the exact math because I teach languages for a reason.  Here is the next list.  I am sure more will come to mind as I get started.

I am determined to create the space to write each day.  How can I do that without giving up precious sleep? That is what I have been doing for the past few weeks- sleeping. Not quite 24/7, though there are days where that would be nice. There are just too many exciting things to do!  Life is full of fun. Choosing the best is a good situation to have!  Lucky me!

Having so many wonderful experiences, everyday!

Imagine a high school where these are the conversations everyone is having, everyone. We have the power to create our world! Our world is how we think it is and how we say it is. That is the power of language!  Seeing students create a positive world where they can share their voices on all different topics is exciting!

How exciting it will be to have these kinds of conversations as a normal part of our day!

Inspiring reflective thoughts and meaningful conversations…

Reason #51 The 6 minutes that started a revolution

All this talk of revolution, this is more of that story...

Is it possible for someone to come into other peoples’ lives for 6 minutes and be truly life-changing? Is it possible for them to do so via media?

If I did not witness it myself, I might be doubtful. However, I have seen it personally.  Even more powerful is that I continue to see it every day, in action.

Candy Chang stepped into of our classroom inn her Ted talk ten days ago. Her presence is still there. Her energy, her story, her inspiration is with all of us and is motivating more than a hundred students to create a shift in our school with their own passion.

The fact that so many other people were so inspired that they created a transformation in their own communities created an understanding that they could do the exact same thing.  And they can connect to the WORLD! My students know that they can do this. It shows in their energy and hearts.

Relationships never end.  This is evidence of that!

Thank you to Candy for stepping out and working to connect her community and in doing so has connected to the world!

Here is my students' vision for the side of the math building:

Merci François pour la photo!  C’est super !  J'aime ton énergie et ton esprit!

To have the opportunity to watch a revolution unfold from the first moment...

Reason #50 The beautiful twists and turns

Oh how life twists
and turns
like a spider
spinning silk
into a web,
each moment
its own fine strand.

As time moves
the web grows,
each strand
of a past moment
building connections
to the present,
a delicate
yet strong frame
for the future.

Stand back.
Admire
the beauty
of all moments
spun beautifully
into one…

Reason #49 Showing, Sharing, Seeing

I am so lucky to work with such gifted artists and deep thinkers.  People ask “How do you do it? How do you work with high school students? That is a tough age” My response is that it is easy and I love it. It is what I am meant to do in life.  I want to ask them, “How do you work with adults? Any age is a tough age.”

Here is Bruno’s response to the question: What is your response to the talk about the “Before I die, I want to _____ “ wall? What impact did it have on you? What impact could it have here at school?

What I find profound about his response it its simplicity:

showing, sharing, and seeing.

All three are required for us to really get to know someone, to see them as family. It is so simple. Together we can all show, share, and see.  Then we can be a family, one of our own creation. That is a beautiful thing!

Who would not work with high school students?

Merci Bruno pour ta créativité, ton esprit, et tes sentiments.  Je suis si heureuse que tu étudies le français et que tu sois dans ma famille !

This is why I teach !

Reason #48 We are all a family

We so often think of family as our immediately relatives, and also distant. We think about the blood ties linking us to the people we have known and loved for as long as we can remember.
There is a shift happening, a time to think about hearts and souls.  We have more family than we could ever imagine and more people to love and people who love us. Where are they? Everywhere! Who are they? Everyone!

Do we feel them? Do we feel our family all around us all the time? Are we looking?   Are we reaching out? What are we doing? Why?

Looking grants seeing like listening grants being.

My classroom is a space, a clearing for opportunities for looking, seeing, listening, and being.  What a rare opportunity to be amongst such a family.  No matter when we begin to see people as our family, they will always remain family.  That is a gift for a lifetime!

Thank you to all the wonderful people in my world.  You fill it with wonder and love!  I am so fortunate and appreciate each and every one of you.

This is why I my world is amazing!

Reason #47 Why paint a wall?

As I was standing by the gym door at the assembly yesterday, the principal was talking to another teacher who had done something to make his life a little more challenging.  At one point he looked in my direction and quietly said “Yeah. And some teachers want to paint a wall.” I appreciated the humor, but also acknowledge the place he has in the revolution my kids started. He is the front man on a project he knew nothing about until two days ago that got the go ahead from the district within a few hours.

I am the instigator, focusing entirely on the positive of the project. That is where my energy is going. My heart is with my kids.  My heart is in this completely.  He, on the other hand, is visualizing the conversation he might have to have to explain this little revolution from a different perspective.

In preparation for our school policy on this project, I asked my students about the purpose of this project the: “Why do you want to do this?”  they had interesting thoughts to share.  It was their idea after all to bring it to our school so they better be able to explain it. Here they are in action with their reasoning:

The purpose of our Interactive Wall Project is to…

express how we feel
make awesome memories
leave something for younger generations to continue
discover that we are not so different
help kids aspire to do something more with their lives
be happy and excited and more engaged in our classes
be encouraged to be more involved in school
give students a space to share and express themselves
give positivity to students and the school
get people involved
spread the positivity and the hope that each of us has within us with those around us.
promote the creative voice of the student body through literacy
motivate the students to achieve their aspirations
to feel comfortable in a school where there is support and no judgment to one’s opinion
become aware of our cultural diversity
stand as a positive advocate to the students and adults alike
allow the students to express their voice and respect other’s ideals and backgrounds
promote connection between students
create a sense of positive community
allow students to express their feelings out loud
get more students involved with reading and writing that is made to be fun
learn what interests students and share
inspire others to create this in more schools
see what people will say
promote the unity of our Highland community
promote literacy and creativity for students through a hands-on activity
provide a way for students to happily participate in the learning process
allow students to express or show their ideas, such as their perspectives, on certain topics
help to expand students’ reading and writing skills
give students an opportunity to express themselves not only through the writing that will be involved, but also because of the art work
teach us to work together as a team to accomplish this big idea
be more involved in school activities that we actually like and are putting together
start thinking about whatever it is the phrase of the week says, whether it is “After I graduate…”, “My inspiration is…”
create a positive impact on the community and on us
as a simple everyday question
realize the little things you don’t take advantage of and try to make the best of the situation
show the community that students think about what can happen later, not just what is happening now
bring community closer
show all the voices here at Highland and show who makes up Highland
connect students and see what goals we have
show other people, who don’t know Highland, how great our school is
give everyone a chance to have a voice and be able to speak their dreams
make people think about how their life is
share voices
spread creativity and let everyone have a voice
share a positive message
inspire people and make them feel good
get people to understand about their life and see what’s important
get to know more people
be able to contribute something that can be life-changing;
make us think a little more about long-term goals and is another way to bring our community together
help people open up as well as me
bring more maturity to our school
help people speak their voices
be a part of something.

Why are students excited about this project?
I am excited about this because gets our mind off of things that stress us out.
I want to be heard and hear everybody else.
I believe we will be making people open their minds…
I am excited about this project because everyone needs to be a part of something.
Maybe people will write the same things on the wall and people will know they aren’t alone, that there are other people like them.

It’ll be such a great feeling for other people to know my goal and something that I’m really excited to do and also able to see what other peoples’ dreams are too!

This is how community inspires creativity! Look at all these reasons, all these heartfelt reasons spoken with emotions and desires. And people think that teenagers can’t have deep conversations about life.  Maybe they just need more opportunities?

I ended up including the entire list in our "Policy" under purpose.  How could anyone pick and choose, water it down?  Not me. No way! All their voices deserve to be shared. That will lead to another entry!

Merci mes enfants pour vos voix, pour vos idées, pour votre croyance que vous pouvez faire une différence chez nous, et dans le monde! Vous êtes formidables !

This is why I teach!
